Dragon's Viet Cong Scout
"Linh"
Ho Chi Minh Trail

The second female figure from Dragon is this Viet Cong Scout. An excerpt from the inside front cover of the box: "As a Viet Cong Scout, Linh's primary missions would be intelligence gathering, sniping, booby trap emplacement, and village defense."

Buying female figures is always a little strange for me. Maybe because they start crossing that line into Barbiedom, or maybe because since I was child, I've always had masculine toys such as He-Man. Well, whatever the case, I went ahead and bought this one and haven't regretted it since (I may hide it from my roommates, but i don't regret it). Anywho, you're getting a really cool figure here that any Vietnam-era collector should not be without. We all need more VC to oppose our troops and she adds a little diversity to all those TUS VC and NVA figures you may have rounded up. You can also try your hand at recreating that great sniper finale in "Full Metal Jacket" (my favorite Vietnam movie). Well, let's get to the gritty details, shall we?

Where do i start? Well, let's start with the body. The female Dragon body is constructed differently than the male one (duh!) to make the figure more feminine and petite. She's still got all the joints and moves of the male body with one exception--the elbows. The elbows are not double-jointed and are a simple hinge joint with part of the bicep cut away to allow for movement similar but not equal to a double-jointed elbow. Did you get that? The hands also don't seem to be removeable but I could be wrong since I haven't used much force trying to figure it out. The waist is probably the biggest casualty of this female body type. My figure's waist has the nasty habit of popping out if I bend it forward too much and let me tell you, it is quite distressing when you're trying to pose a figure and she splits in two! It is easy to pop back in and hopefully the neo-eve body or whatever it's called has remedied this shortcoming.

The head sculpt is great and has rooted hair which has been tied into two braids. I'm glad they didn't make her face strikingly beautiful and I'm also glad they didn't make her painfully ugly. She has a plain face and has a calm expression on her face. Maybe it's too calm because she almost looks very cheerful. I think they should have made her face with a more serious or determined look....maybe if they made her eyes meaner...ah who knows.

Linh wears the typical VC black pajamas and comes with sandals made from old tires, a conical straw hat, canteen, a three-pocket rucksack, a two pocket grenade pouch, two stick grenades, a US Army pattern 56 belt, an M1 carbine rifle, two clips, ammo pouch, and kerchief. All of these items have great detail. The sandals have worn soles, the three pocket rucksack feels nice and durable, the grenade pouch is cloth and not molded plastic, the rifle has a great wood grain finish, the ammo pouch opens and closes and allows you to store the clips in it. Whew! All of this gear is top notch and when everything is on, the figure just looks marvelous. I kind of wish the straw hat were really straw though; instead it is a flexible plastic material.

So let's recap--if you collect Vietnam-era figures...GET THIS FIGURE!! If you feel wierd about buying a figure that resembles a Barbie-doll...GET OVER IT! Cuz once you have this figure, you won't regret it.
